Government Rejects Calls for ‘Menopause Leave’ at Work: Editor’s Note

A lack of support for women experiencing menopause will cause an estimated 1,000,000 to leave their job. Editor Olivia Hartland Robbins discusses her views on the Government’s decision to reject calls of’menopause leaves’

Supporting women doesn’t automatically discriminate against men.

Is the government insulting the women by not taking action to combat the menopause?

It has slammed women’s doors in their faces when the progress was finally starting to emerge on this subject.

Last month, the government rejected an amendment to the law intended to help menopausal woman.

A million women are estimated to leave their jobs due to the lack of support during menopause

The Equalities Act was amended to include menopause as a “protected characteristic” in the recommendation of the Commons Women and Equalities Committee.

The report focused on menopause in the workplace and how women often feel unsupported and are forced out of their jobs due to menopause symptoms.

According to a BUPA & CIPD study, 1 million women are estimated to leave their jobs due to a lack support during menopause.

The government’s rejection of the proposal is even more shocking.

Caroline Nokes, Conservative MP said it was a missed opportunity to prevent a large number of talented and experienced females from leaving the workplace. She added that she is not convinced that menopause should be a priority for the Government.

Dr Dawn Harper , an NHS GP and broadcaster, commented that ‘working women in menopause are the fastest-growing demographic in the UK. They also tend to be the most senior.

“Unfortunately, employers in the UK are not aware of how menopause can affect their employees. A lack of support is pushing women away from the workplace.”

Menopause at work has been a hot topic for many years, despite the government’s refusal. Many companies have invested time and money in supporting their menopausal employees.
