Dr Louise is on a mission to dispel the myths about Hormone Replacement Therapy
Dr Louise Newson will appear at the event. She is a GP and UK menopause expert and founder of Newson Health Research and Education, which is a not-for profit organization. Her mission is to give women accurate information about menopause and HRT so that they can make informed decisions regarding their menopause and postmenopause treatment options rather than relying upon outdated information.
Dr Louise wants to separate the fact from fiction surrounding Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Dr Louise gives her insights on the top three HRT myths…
MYTH#1: Taking HRT can be harmful to your health
HRT has a wider range of health benefits, including a reduced risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. It also reduces the risk for clinical depression, bowel carcinoma, and, in some cases dementia. HRT is a good option for most women. The benefits outweigh the risks.
MYTH 2 ‘The best time for HRT to be taken is when I am menopausal.’
The perimenopause is the time period leading up to menopause, when symptoms begin and periods change.
Perimenopause symptoms include brain fog and mood changes. They also include hot flushes and loss of sexual interest.
The most effective Hormone Replacement Therapy begins during the perimenopause or within 10 years after menopause.
MYTH # 3 – Does HRT cause breast tumors?
Breast cancer risk has not been associated with most types of body-identical HRT. The risk is only statistically significant for older forms of HRT.
Breast cancer is not caused by Hormone Replacement Therapy. Other risk factors include obesity, inactivity and alcohol consumption.
